Drug Harm Reduction
It’s always safer to not use drugs, but if you do, make sure you're informed.
University brings lots of new experiences and you may be faced with drugs and drug use.
The most commonly used drugs in Ireland are cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis.
Cocaine is a stimulant, and effects can last 30 minutes. It can make you feel alert, or anxious and can be addictive.
Ecstasy and MDMA are stimulants that commonly come in pills or powders. It can take an hour to hit, and effects of euphoria can last up to 6 hours. It can cause tight jaw, difficulty urinating and low mood days after use.
Cannabis is often used to relax. It comes as a herb, resin, or oil and can cause feelings of hunger and dry mouth and long-term can cause paranoia, low mood, and lung damage (if smoked.)
At university you may also encounter certain prescription drugs like Ritalin (methylphenidate) that are used as study enhancers. Prescription drugs may seem like a safe option, but they can be unpredictable if they haven’t been prescribed to you.
It’s also vital to be aware of the risk of spiking, especially when going out to clubs. Common spiking drugs are GHB, Ketamine and benzodiazepines like Rohypnol. Never leave your drinks unattended and if you think you’ve been spiked call 999/112 immediately.
It’s always safer to not use drugs, but if you do:
- Start with small amounts
- Stay with your friends
- Avoiding mixing drugs, alcohol, or medications
- Don’t overexert yourself (e.g. dancing)
- Stay hydrated but don’t drink more than a pint an hour. Too much water can lead to electrolyte imbalances that can be fatal.
- Call 112 or 999 if you begin to feel unwell.
Stay safe and reach out if you need advice.
